Silk is a luxe fabric that requires special care to maintain its softness, sheen, and unique texture. Whether it's a favourite blouse, scarf, or bedsheets, proper care ensures your silk garments stay beautiful for longer.
Here is SABA’s guide to washing, drying, ironing, and storing your silk items.
How to Wash Silk by Hand
Soak: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and soak your silk clothing for no more than 10 minutes.
Detergent: Use a special detergent designed for silk or a mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Stains: Gently rub any stains with your fingers or a soft cloth.
Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residue.
How to Wash Silk by Machine-Washing
If machine washing is necessary, always choose a "hand wash" option, ensuring no spin cycle is used.
Detergent: Use a silk-friendly detergent and avoid fabric softeners, as they can leave residue on the fabric.
Protection: Place your silk item in a protective laundry bag to prevent damage.
How to Dry Silk
Avoid twisting: Never wring or twist silk to remove excess water, as this can cause damage to the fabric.
Dabbing: Gently press your silk garment between two clean terry cotton towels to absorb excess moisture.
Air dry: Lay flat or hang the garment on a hanger to dry. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent fading or distortion.
How to Iron Silk
Low Heat: Iron silk inside out using the lowest heat setting to prevent scorching.
Damp cloth: For extra protection, place a clean, slightly damp cloth between the iron and the silk fabric.
No direct heat: Avoid ironing silk directly as high temperatures can burn or damage the fabric’s delicate sheen.
Additional Tips
Silk doesn't need frequent washing. Only wash your silk garments when they are visibly dirty to reduce your environmental impact. Store silk garments in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Avoid damp or humid areas to prevent the buildup of mildew.
For coloured silk items, wash them separately, particularly on the first wash, to avoid colour bleeding. Always wash new coloured silk items separately for the first time to prevent dye transfer. When washing silk, ensure the load is balanced to allow the fabric to move freely, improving the wash quality; and always adhere to the care tag attached to your SABA clothing.
By following these simple care instructions, your silk items can maintain their luxurious feel and appearance for years to come.
