The SABA-ISTS:
Monica Russell, Market Editor at Marie Claire

‘Classic, eclectic, evolving and forever-changing,’ is how Monica Russell best describes her aesthetic. A woman of many talents, her considered approach to style is distinctly her own – expressive, visually inspiring…and then some. Just before the height of MBFWA, we were able to briefly catch up with Monica about her role as Market Editor at Marie Claire and Fashion Week.

I love the fast-paced nature of the industry and how you always need to be two steps ahead. It’s a bit of a whirlwind but it’s exciting, no two days are ever the same.

Getting the opportunity to work with so many wildly talented people is a major career highlight for me. If I asked myself 10 years ago what I would be doing at 26, I wouldn’t have dreamed I would be getting to collaborate with so many inspiring, creative people on a daily basis. There is so much talent in Australia.

Fashion Week is generally a pretty busy week, very long eventful days. I’m usually rushing from show to show and taking notes at each. As a Market Editor, I need to look out for upcoming trends and talent. It’s a great week to discover new brands and designers, spy any new models in town and to get inspiration for upcoming shoots.

As much as I try to be organised with outfits for Fashion Week, it never really goes to plan. With late nights and early starts I often tend to fall back on tried-and-tested wardrobe staples that I know I feel comfortable in – black trousers, fuss-free dresses, denim and blazers often do the trick. I try not to get caught up in the whole street-style scene and stick to outfits that are true to my sense of style. I like to add personal touches through accessories, and a great pair of shoes always helps to elevate a look.

Tailoring, I’m seeing a lot of great man-style two piece suits on the international fashion circuit; sharp blazers and neat trousers. Neutral tones and top-to-toe beige dressing. Silk dresses and floor length coats. Square toe boots, gold jewellery, hair accessories and mini bags.

I’m currently lusting over the chic Eloise suit. It’s perfectly tailored and fits like a dream. I’d wear this suit for years to come and not tire of it. Also loving the super cute balloon sleeve Nat Blouse – adorable!
